Drugs Issues
For today, I wanted to share with you my attitude to the situation with drugs in N. Novgorod. Then I’ll probably come up with some measures which I personally consider really effective to solve this problem.
Everyone knows that practically each drug impairs our health. By the way, some people prefer to split them into so-called “light” and “hard” but in fact there is no difference between them. According to one article which I’ve read once, people get addicted to some “light” kind of drugs the same way as to their “harder” options. All these substances are harmful: starting from problems with manual dexterity to frequent blanks in memory. Despite this, there are still some disputes among people on this question. Nevertheless, we should pose this problem to come up with some ways to solve it, at least theoretically.
However, let’s think over this problem and assume whether it exists in N. Novgorod. I would say yes. Based upon the headline news, the current situation with peddling and using drugs becomes worse constantly . There are a lot of drug addicts, especially young people. Some of them try to take illegal substances at school encouraged and instigated by peer pressure. Others become drug dealers or start deliver drugs for the sake of getting money. And also there are people who start taking them to dull inner ache.
From where I’m sitting, I saw some of the people being under the influence of drugs. It happened in the buses, on the streets and I even know such people in real life. And I think the situation may be even worse than we think. And since N. Novgorod is quite an enormous city, the drug industry here is growing very fast.
However, who is liable for all of this? What measures our local government of N. Novgorod can exploit to prevent the situation gets worse? By the way some of the measures are used already, for example the scientists from the local Research and Educational Center invented a smart device which allows indicating if there are some substances in someone’s blood without any contact. It is claimed, it can react to three main factors: respiratory, cardio and the one that concerned work of the brain. It will help to reduce or at least lessen the number of drug addicts. The police will be able to identify them when they are going down the streets. More than that, the police of N. Novgorod is on its guard and every day picks up drug dealers and discloses underground laboratories. But as we can see it might be not enough to make the situation better. That is why it’s high time we talked about what else may be done.
At first, some prevention and education measures. Firstly, children should be aware of this problem, so teachers and parents need to tell them about it. Secondly, there should be created some serious centers for people who find themselves in a difficult psychological situations and don’t know where to go and whom to talk to. The professionals working there would dissuade them if they wanted to resort to drugs. Certainly, it would not work for all the society because not everyone would make calls and share their problems.
In the second instance, let’s take a look at some treatment measures. I strongly believe that we can fight this problem of drugs by redirecting the adequate financial resources toward addiction recovery. The treatment should be free or low-price for everyone, and it should be compulsory. When it is available for each person, more lives would be saved.
And the third option is punishment. The police should enforce drug matters and to make use of more improved techniques of indicating and catching drugs addicts and dealers. What is more, several laws should function: for peddling, producing and using illegal substances. The sentences would become not harder but smarter. For dope users there would be two options: working for free at the rehabilitation centers to look at the people who are suffering or experiencing withdrawal and its disastrous symptoms. It would show to users the consequences of doing drugs. And the second variant is several hours of social work, it would depend on a particular case. For drug dealers and people who deliver them to others, and for those who produce them, the sentence is to be more serious. They must be imprisoned and the sentence should again depend on a certain case and various aspects.
Maybe one day we will come to decriminalization or legalization of drugs as the way of fighting them but this is a different story that has its pros and cons.
Hope you enjoyed this post. Thank you for reading till the end. I’d be glad if you leave some comments below if you have some thoughts to share.
