When you’re REAL you don’t mind being hurt.

This lovely story by Margery Williams is about love. The love that can change the world. The love which is sincere.

While reading this sweet story, the sadness was coming over to me bit by bit. It was hard to read particularly : the contrast of the poor velveteen rabbit’s hopes with his fate was too strong, personally for me.

Actually, one of the biggest obstacles on his way to become what he wanted to be was the rest of playthings which considered themselves superior to the little rabbit. Timothy, the Wooden Lion, the arrogant Model Boat and the other mechanical and soft toys that looked down on the velveteen rabbit only because they thought they’re better. But in reality, there were no strong reasons to think so. Despite the velveteen bunny wasn’t a model of something important just like they were, he was much smarter than the rest of the toys in the nursery.

Even though the velveteen rabbit was a brand-new toy, he inquired whether he was real of he was still just a toy that would be forgotten by the Boy one day. The one who came off not as a cold fish was The Skin Horse who looked threadbare and worn-out. He lived longer than any of the toys in the nursery and observed the lives of the other playthings there. He talked to the velveteen rabbit about his tough question. The bunny felt embarrassed but his elderly fellow explained to him that it takes a lot of time to become REAL and it never ever happens suddenly.

By the way, the metaphor here is rather remarkable. The author showed us what if the toys could think and feel the same as people do. Despite this story is familiar to a fairy tail because it is connected with magic, the thread of it is the development of the velveteen bunny’s feelings and the “relationship” between him and the Boy. And the author related to the bunny as to a real person who is able to jealous of sb, love sb etc. And he was compared to the person to show that, in real life, people often seek for support from other people. That’s why The Skin Horse was right : you only can become REAL if you have sb next to you who believes in you.

To sum up, I like this lovely story and I also listened to the audio version told by Meryl Streep. It was splendid!

Hugs,
